22 year old pretty boy with a septum piercing outside the bar trying to manipulate me into taking him back to my place so he can steal my vintage gaming consoles: you really should stop smoking. it smells awful, and cigarettes are bad for you anyways. wouldn’t you rather play Shenmue, released in 1999, on the Sega Dreamcast?
me, halfway through my fifth can of Hamm’s:

Controversial media takes of various kinds:
MAD MEN is not a good show. It *could* have been a good show, but it's constantly kneecapped by the showrunners' uncertainty about whether they want to critique Don Draper or fellate him (with the show inevitably opting for the latter) and their determination to sideline the other characters (who are often more interesting, and sometime played by actors less insufferable than Jon Hamm, whom I hate) in favor of Don. The longer the show goes on, the less it knows what to do with the period events it references other than to have the characters nod solemnly at them, it only intermittently remembers that Jewish people and people of color exist (and it never actually cares), and its contempt for its female characters (whose story the show really should have been) becomes more and more troubling. Also, a big chunk of the premise is ripped off rather shamelessly from the popular Sloan Wilson novel THE MAN IN THE GRAY FLANNEL SUIT (which had an indifferent film adaptation starring Gregory Peck).
SOME LIKE IT HOT is not pioneering Queer Representation, it's a series of offensive homophobic jokes and transphobic Men in Dresses gags by a notoriously mean-spirited writer-director who thought that shit was just hilarious, starring two of my least favorite American male stars of the period. It's also not funny at all unless you share Wilder's chaser-transphobe predilections. If you're LGBT and you love this awful movie, I certainly can't stop you, but understand that Billy Wilder was very definitely laughing at you, and ask yourself if you're okay with that.
Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce were perfectly fine as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson; some of the Universal Holmes films are actually quite good despite their modest budgets; and having Bruce play Watson as a comic-relief buffoon was an eminently reasonable creative decision because it gave Watson something to do onscreen other than be constantly awed at Holmes' brilliance, which is boring and reduces the actor to a glorified prop.
The Jeremy Brett Holmes TV series of the eighties is mid at best: Brett is not the definitive Holmes; his decision to play Holmes as an icy misanthrope (which Holmes is not in the canon) makes those versions frequently unpleasant to watch; and any time the show's writers try to expand upon the Doyle stories, they inevitably go very wrong. I can put on any of the Rathbone/Bruce movies, even the bad ones, and find it at least agreeable background noise, but the thought of revisiting the Granada show makes me grimace.
The Stephen Sommers MUMMY movies with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are incredibly racist — as are all iterations of that franchise, including the 1932 Karloff film and the more recent, wretched Alex Kurtzman iteration with Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella — which really undermines their entertainment value even as Big Stupid Popcorn Fun, no matter how how hot you thought Fraser and Weisz were. THE MUMMY (1999) was startlingly racist by the standards of 25 years ago and it has not aged well.
HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH is incredibly offensive transmisogynistic hackwork and the attempts to position it as a modern-day ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW Participatory Event speak volumes about what y'all actually take from the latter.

Favorite non-European (and non-South American) old/retired football player?
For women's:
I love a lot of the former USWNT players like Mia Hamm, Abby Wambach, Brandi Chastain, Michelle Akers and Brianna Scurry.
Also, Homare Sawa and Aya Miyama who played for the Japanese NT, Sun Wen who played for the Chinese NT.
Mercy Akide and Perpetua Nkwocha who played for the Nigerian NT. Genoveva Añonman who played for Equatorial Guinea.
For men's:
For Australian NT (didn't include any female Australian NT players because our best players are currently playing): Tim Cahill, Mark Viduka, Mark Schwarzer and Mark Bosnich (who had a crazy life).
Special mention to the 1974 Australian squad who somehow managed to qualify for the world cup despite mostly being part time salesmen who played for amateur clubs.
Park Ji-Sung for South Korean NT, Hidetoshi Nakata who played for the Japanese NT (Perugia 1998/1999 kit will always be iconic).
George Weah for Liberian NT, Didier Drogba for Ivory Coast NT.

if you ask me Foudy thinks the US can’t win and wants them to play all youth so they will be “better next time” she had a similar attitude before the last WC wanted Mal getting more mins in 2019, thought they would lose to france. she’s just stuck in the 90s when her and Mia Hamm were competitive players at 16. those days are over youth is great but experience won us the last cup and is required to compete in this one
Move on Julie Foudy.😂 its not 1999 anymore. Umm god bless Mia Hamm though (i won't speak badly about Her ever). But yes i think Foudy wants the uswnt completely gutted and remade with younger players. She doesn't understand the importance of having both vets and young stars on the same team.

"Out Of This World" Part 1
The next World Cup in 1995 didn’t do much for the growth of the game in the states, but at least there was a women's world cup to follow the 1991 championship. Sweden hosted the games and Norway got their revenge on the U.S. by winning the tournament. Again the games were not broadcasted on Television in the U.S, however 1 in 4 people in Norway were believed to watch their women win the title. Back to the drawing board, the United States would start to prepare for the next major tournament, and one that would be hosted on home soil for the first time, the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. The USWNT would go on to dominate the tournament, “they played in front of 76,481 fans during the gold-medal match in Athens, Georgia, the most spectators to attend a female sporting event worldwide at the time.” Already you can see the increase of spectators coming out to watch the women play and setting records one tournament at a time. The increase was steady as the tournament went on, leading up to the record-breaking final. A part of this was actually because Americans were still getting accustomed to the sport of soccer, baseball, basketball, and football were the major sports of the time. Many Americans found the game of mens soccer to be boring because of the slow play at times, low-scoring games, and no timeouts for advertisements or entertainment. Because women were generally smaller, the large field actually played in their favor allowing for more movement of the ball. Players like Mia Hamm learned how to take advantage of this and the USWNT dominated in 50/50 spaces using their heads and constantly applying pressure on the ball. Fans slowly began to appreciate the game and more people would come out to watch. The U.S. men's team has never really had an impressive record which left a big space in the soccer world in the U.S. that the women's team seemed to fit in nicely. Despite growing in popularity, FIFA still wasn’t convinced leading up to the 1999 World Cup. For starters these tournaments cost a lot of money to produce, and FIFA couldn’t even decide if women playing soccer was something they wanted to invest in because of the lingering gender stereotypes at the time, “ Some traditional male sentiments remained among much of the world, and FIFA envisioned a small regional tournament, ideally held in high school stadiums that would not create too much attention and fuss. Hank Steinbrecher of the USSF would have none of that. Declaring that “The future of women’s soccer is feminine”, he was determined from the start this would be a full-blown tournament, in large stadiums coast to coast. And that it would be. Full advertising and marketing budgets, large stadium crowds, and world attention were to ensure the tournament would get the press it deserved and be taken seriously, and that was the word from day one.” And with that the U.S. was set to host the 1999 FIFA World Cup.

'...LIMITED SERIES
WINNER: Baby Reindeer Fargo Lessons in Chemistry Ripley True Detective: Night Country
In another year, any of these worthy contenders could well sweep the limited series categories...Ripley found an entirely fresh take on a classic novel that had already inspired multiple adaptations, including a canonical 1999 film...Unfortunately for these series, they were all released the same year as Baby Reindeer, an out-of-nowhere phenomenon that feels like a spiritual successor to Fleabag - and we all remember how many Emmys Fleabag won, right?
ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIES OR TV MOVIE
Matt Bomer, Fellow Travelers Richard Gadd, Baby Reindeer WINNER: Jon Hamm, Fargo Tom Hollander, Feud: Capote vs The Swans Andrew Scott, Ripley
There is no Baby Reindeer without Richard Gadd...But Gadd also seems like a lock in the limited series writing category, which may cause voters to look elsewhere in limited series acting - and those voters are very high on Hamm's supply, having nominated him in two separate categories this year...
SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A LIMITED SERIES OR TV MOVIE
Dakota Fanning, Ripley Lily Gladstone, Under the Bridge WINNER: Jessica Gunning, Baby Reindeer Aja Naomi King, Lessons in Chemistry Diane Lane, Feud: Capote vs The Swans Nava Mau, Baby Reindeer Kali Reis, True Detective: Night Country
Few of us could have identified Jessica Gunning's face in a police lineup early this year, but who wouldn't recognise her now? Her riveting performance in Baby Reindeer makes Gunning the very likely frontrunner in this race. She does face stiff competition from Kali Reis...as well as more established figures like Dakota Fanning and Diane Lane...though, the award feels like it's Gunning's to lose.
DIRECTING FOR A LIMITED SERIES
WINNER: Baby Reindeer - Weronika Tofilska for "Episode 4" Fargo -Noah Hawley for "The Tragedy of the Commons" Feud: Capote vs The Swans - Gus Van Sant for "Pilot" Lessons in Chemistry - Millicent Shelton for "Poirot" Ripley - Steven Zaillian True Detective: Night Country - Issa Lopez
This category can seem like it's comparing apples to oranges. Two of the directors (True Detective: Night Country's Issa Lopez and Ripley's Steven Zaillian) are nominated for helming entire limited series - and visually stunning ones at that...But in each of the last two Emmy seasons, the show that won best limited series...also snagged the directing and writing categories. That puts Baby Reindeer in power position...'
WRITING FOR A LIMITED SERIES
WINNER: Baby Reindeer - Richard Gadd Black Mirror - Charlie Brooker for "Joan Is Awful" Fargo - Noah Hawley for "The Tragedy of the Commons" Fellow Travelers - Ron Nyswaner for "You're Wonderful" Ripley - Steven Zaillian True Detective: Night Country - Issa Lopez for "Part 6"
As with the limited series directing category, recent history suggests that this category will likely go to the best limited series winner. That would mean a first writing Emmy for Richard Gadd...A sweep for Baby Reindeer would be quite a feat considering the talent in this category. It includes Oscar vets Steven Zaillian and Ron Nyswaner, Emmy winners Noah Hawley and Charlie Brooker, and Mexican auteur Issa Lopez, any of whom could be a wildcard winner...'

My origin story
Hello. A little bit about me as I start on this journey. I love soccer. I tell people that soccer is my religion. If you can't tell by the use of my word "soccer" over "football," I am American, and I fell in love with the game late. The first game I ever watched was the 1999 USWNT final vs. China. I don't know why I was home that day, as I was never home in high school. I don't know what prompted me to turn on the 13 inch television in my room and settle on that game, but I did. I watched the whole damn game. The overtime. Every penalty. The only name I had ever heard of at that time was Mia Hamm. But Brandi Chastain was the one who made the lasting impression. When she ripped her shirt off...that moment was etched in my little feminist brain FOREVER. Then, I went to live in El Salvador for a few years where I had to pledge my allegiance to either Real Madrid or Barcelona. Years later, I would finally make that decision and opt for Atlético Madrid thanks to my love for Fernando Torres. Now, I am addicted. If it's Saturday or Sunday morning, I am watching a Premier League game. If it's Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon, I have the TV turned to a UCL match. I even watch an occasional Europa League game on a Thursday afternoon, much to the behest of my other soccer friends. But I live for the World Cup and I can't wait for it come to the United States in 2026. And, I always root for a good underdog (I'm talking to you Morocco and you Leicester City). And, if you're a Manc, you're a wank (both City and United), and North London will always be Lily White and never red. But deep down, I love Chelsea, ever since their miraculous Champions League run in 2012.
